TSAVO’S RED ELEPHANTS
Tsavo is the only sanctuary in the world that boasts the red elephants, and these majestic animals are the park’s greatest attraction. The elephants are actually the same grey colour as every other elephant in the world, however, they just appear brick - red due to constantly dust bathing in the fine red volcanic soil of Tsavo. They dust and wallow to cool off and deter parasites.
The Bonfire Adventures tour guides make it possible to spot hundreds of these red jumbos. The elephants take every possible opportunity to roll in the red soil; always ablaze when doing it, giving it their best! As our guides drive you to the water holes, you’ll be lucky enough to enjoy a water show. The elephants playfully spray each other competing their grooming ritual.
-
THE MAN-EATING LIONS OF TSAVO
The shaggy maned lions of the legendary man – eaters of Tsavo – are one of the most memorable sights that you’ll get to spot. These specific predators rose to fame back in 1898, when 2 male lions chewed their way through 135 railway workers in a span of 9 months. This was during the construction of the Kenyan-Uganda railway. The lions were eventually shot and killed by Colonel John Patterson, and are on display at the Chicago Natural History Museum in the USA. Their descendants however still roam freely in the Park, although thankfully they now prefer zebra and gazelles as their staple food.
-
SANCTUARY FOR RHINOS
The grand, majestic, but shy rhinos are an endangered species – and one of the most sought for animals in the wild. Tsavo is definitely one of the top best destinations to spot them. No where else in the planet can you observe so many different black rhinos thanks to the newly established “Rhino Viewing Platform situated at the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. This highly protected free-ranging area is home to over 80 rhinos. Their population has increased vastly since the mass poaching of the 1960s. Trust the Bonfire Adventures tour guides to reward the guests with a safari here leaving you with excellent memories.
-
SHETANI LAVA FLOW
About 4km west of the Chyulu gate in Tsavo West are the spectacular Shetani Lava Flows. Shetani which is a Swahili term for Devil: The flows were formed over 200 years ago. The locals believed that it was the devil himself emerging from the earth. The expanse of folded black lava spreads for over 50 sq km across the savannah serving as an awe-inspiring reminder of the power of nature. Haunting and memorable, this spot is definitely worth the visit.
